Pygmy Hippopotamus Fun Fact: A fun fact about the pygmy hippopotamus is that they are much more reclusive and solitary compared to their larger relatives, the common hippos. Unlike the social common hippos that live in large groups, pygmy hippos are mostly nocturnal and prefer to stay hidden in the dense forests and swamps of West Africa, where they live alone or in pairs. They’re also excellent swimmers, with their eyes and nostrils positioned high on their heads to stay mostly submerged while navigating through water!

Each of their eyes is about the same size as their brain, which gives them exceptional night vision. This helps them hunt insects and small prey in the dark, as they are nocturnal creatures. Their huge eyes and ability to rotate their heads almost 180 degrees give them an incredibly sharp sense of sight at night!

Lion Fun Fact: A fun fact about lions is that they are the only truly social big cats, living in groups called prides. A pride typically consists of multiple related females, their cubs, and a few adult males. This social structure allows lions to cooperate in hunting, defend their territory more effectively, and care for their young together, which is unique compared to other big cat species that are usually solitary.

Poison Dart Frog Fun Fact: A fun fact about poison dart frogs is that their bright, colorful skin serves as a warning to predators. This warning is effective because the frogs secrete toxins through their skin that can be deadly. Interestingly, poison dart frogs raised in captivity don’t develop these toxins because their diet in the wild (certain insects) is what contributes to their toxicity!
