Babirusa Fun Fact: A fun fact about the babirusa is that the males have incredibly unusual and dramatic tusks that grow upward, sometimes curving back toward their own skulls! These tusks are actually their upper canine teeth, which grow through the top of the snout. In some cases, if the tusks aren’t worn down, they can even grow long enough to pierce the babirusa’s own skull, though this is rare. Their name means “pig-deer” in Indonesian, referencing their pig-like body and deer-like tusks.
